Aviator sunglasses were developed by Bausch & Lomb. The original design is now marketed as the Ray-Ban Aviators, however, other manufacturers also manufacture aviator style sunglasses. They are thin metal frames with a double bridge. The original design has the G-15 tempered glass lens, transmitting 15% incoming light. The large lenses are not flat but slightly convex. The design attempts to cover the entire range of the human eye and prevent as much light as possible from entering the eye from any angle.

Ray-Ban were the first one to come up with the aviator sunglasses, conceived in 1930's to protect eyes from harmful rays for the US Air Force Pilots. It was Bausch & Lomb at that time that manufactured the aviator glasses. The aviators sunglasses became the perfect solution to protect a pilot's eyes against the blinding glare of the sun at high altitude. The aviator was however, not restricted to the cockpit of the aircraft. The first aviators went on sale in 1937, featuring a plastic frame later modified to the classic teardrop shape in metal frame. There after the aviators became popular with fisherman and golfers, leading to the to the common man to wear these. It took a few celebrities to wear them to make them popular enough for the world to take notice.

Other styles also came into the market but the original aviators who shape was adopted as a generic style by other eyewear brands like Gucci, Burberry etc have maintained their momentum. However, until a couple of years back, aviators were considered a men's style. Today, the option in aviators have browns and pinks along with smaller sizes, so they are seen on catwalks and red carpets.

Today, the aviator family of products range from classic to functional to fashion styles with new colours and materials. Aviator sunglasses for men in India are available at off-line and on-line stores. However, most online stores have better logistics and the consumer gets the product at home. The entire process has made buying sunglasses online in India a much simpler process.
