Everything You Need to Know About Astigmatism

Astigmatism is a common vision problem which results in blurred vision. This is generally caused when the cornea is irregular in shape or due to the curvature of the lens inside the eye. This lens or irregular shaped cornea prevents the light rays from focusing correctly on the retina, which is the light sensitive portion at the back of the eye. This results in hazy vision (almost at any distance) and cause headaches to the patient.

Below are given various facts about astigmatism

Types of astigmatism: There are mainly three types of astigmatism that exist:

  • Myopic astigmatism:

  • When the meridians (two lines at the front of the eye) may be one or both are near sighted, then this is the type of myopic astigmatism.

  • Hyperopic astigmatism:

  • When the meridians of the eyes may be one or both are far sighted then this case is known as hyperopic astigmatism.

  • Mixed astigmatism:

  • When one meridian of the eye is far sighted and the other one is near sighted, then this case is known as mixed astigmatism.

There are also two types of astigmatism, irregular and regular. Regular astigmatism causes the meridians to be perpendicular to each other whereas the irregular ones are not perpendicularly placed.

Symptoms of astigmatism

The common symptoms of astigmatism that can be found are mainly blurry vision, headache, eyestrain, squinting, and difficulty in driving at night. These symptoms if noticed in any person, it may signify that the person is suffering from astigmatism. To be fully sure, the person suffering from these symptoms should consult an eye doctor and do some tests if necessary to know the actual disease that is there in the body of the patient.

Treatment of astigmatism

Astigmatism is an eye disease that can cause discomfort in vision for someone. This should also cause various other problems and needs to be cured. There are various options to treat astigmatism and provide clear vision to the patient:

Eyeglasses: Eyeglasses is an option that helps the patients to regain their clear vision. These glasses contain a special cylindrical lens and it provides vision power to specific parts of the lens.

Contact lenses: contact lenses help to regain the clear vision and may result better than eyeglasses for some people. They help to provide a clear and wider view and this need to be cleaned for better care of the eye.

Orthokeratology: In this method, a series of rigid contact lenses are fitted to reshape the cornea. Patients wearing lenses may get clear vision, but if they stop wearing these lenses, they may end up having the disease back. This is a temporary treatment and may cause the disease to return if the lens is not worn regularly.

Laser and other surgery: Astigmatism is also be treated by reshaping the cornea with various surgeries and lasers such as LASIK (laser in situ keratomileusis) and PRK. These surgeries effectively reshape the cornea and prevent astigmatism.

Thus we can see that astigmatism can be cured and help the patients to regain clear vision and also prevent various discomforts like headache etc. People can apply for glasses or lenses to get relief. A great example of lenses is Air optix for astigmatism that make monthly disposable silicon hydrogel disposable lenses.
